Passport photo size guide
Passport photo sizes are not universal
The United States uses a square 2×2-inch photo, the United Kingdom uses 35×45 mm, and Canada uses 50×70 mm. The head measurement also changes by country.
| Country | Printed photo | Head measurement | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 51 × 51 mm 2 × 2 in | 25–35 mm from chin to top of head | Department of State |
| United Kingdom | 35 mm wide × 45 mm high | 29–34 mm from crown to chin | GOV.UK |
| Canada | 50 mm wide × 70 mm high | 31–36 mm from chin to crown | Canada.ca |
United States: 2×2 inches
A printed US passport photo must be 2×2 inches (51×51 mm). The head must be centered and measure 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. The photo must be recent, in color, and taken against a plain white or off-white background.
Follow the step-by-step US 2×2 passport photo guide.
United Kingdom: 35×45 mm
Printed UK passport photos must be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. GOV.UK specifies a crown-to-chin image height of 29–34 mm. Digital applications have a different upload workflow, so use the requirements shown for your application method.
Canada: 50×70 mm
Canadian printed passport photos must be 50 mm wide and 70 mm high, with a face height of 31–36 mm from chin to crown. Canada also requires printed photos to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio and professionally printed. An app can help you understand the framing, but it does not replace those official service requirements.
What about EU or Schengen photos?
There is no single passport authority for every European country. A 35×45 mm format is common, but you should verify the exact document, country, age, and application channel with the issuing authority. Visa requirements can also differ from passport requirements.
Always check the official source shortly before applying. Dimensions are only one part of acceptance. Authorities also evaluate recency, expression, lighting, focus, background, clothing, and whether the photo has been altered.
Use a country preset instead of manual cropping
IDFrame includes presets for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, India, EU/Schengen, South Korea, Brazil, Vietnam, and Mexico. Select the country, position the face in the visible guide, review the background, and export an individual image or print-ready sheet. You can also enter a custom size in millimeters or inches.
